Obsession with Color

Ever since I started working, I have had a love affair with blushes. It just brightens my day knowing that even if I look like shit, I can still somehow look decent by adding a pop of color to my cheeks.

And it's just great to have so many choices! Pick from: peach, pink, peachy-pink, cotton candy-pink, berry pink, plum, coral, red, reddish rose, old rose, orange, tangerine orange, brownish rose, bronze, terracota brown, beige pink, bronzed peach, nude pink - I can go on and on! There are also undertones to choose from - yellow undertones, warm, cool, blue undertones, pink with peach undertones, etc etc etc. There are also various finishes - sheertone, matte, satin. You can also choose if you want it to have shimmer or not.

I have 8 blushes as of now. Maybe non-makeup junkies would say this is too many already, since I can't even finish one pot in one year. Many, do you say? What about this list of a fellow GirlTalker, and I quote:

Say what?! I wouldn't even dare count how many she listed. I, for one, am only limited to brands available here in Manila (i.e. NARS, MAC, Laura Mercier, etc). If not for them, I might not even know that there are brands such as Cargo, Tarte, Stila, Cheeky Pop, etc. For the record, I've also tried local brands such as Ever Bilena and it's also quite good, but if you're a very picky blush girl and you pay attention to details, you'll really see the difference in terms of the quality of the powder. It also didn't help any that I got tiny zits when I used it.

This is a rather expensive "hobby." MAC blushes cost around P1,200. NARS cost around P1,350 before their price increase. Laura Mercier are relatively cheaper at P800+. However, these are really good investments (yeah, hear me talk about investments!), because 1) good blushes last long - you don't have to re-apply during the day, 2) the powder is finely-milled, 3) less probability of breakouts compared to local brands, etc. Trust me on this one. Of course, you would need a good blush brush to go with your blush, if you want even application.... Just so you know - a MAC blush brush will set you back by around P1,600-P1,800. It's funny, right, how the actual blush costs less than the brush (there's a reason for this, but we're gonna veer away from the topic). So if you're a newbie, you'll probably shell out P1,00+ for the blush itself and another P1,000+ for the brush. However, there are cheaper alternatives to MAC like the Bloom Blush Brush (available in Beauty Bar) only costs around P900. But more on brushes on another post, methinks.

This is not to say that I would like my collection of blushes to rival theirs. I don't plan to, thank you very much. But I can't help but salivate when I look at their lists. So many choices, you wouldn't even believe!

To end this post and to probably quell your curiousity, here's my personal list of blushes:
1) MAC Fleur Power
2) NARS Orgasm
3) NARS Sin
4) Laura Mercier Crushed Hazelnut
5) Bobbi Brown Blushed Rose
6) Bobbi Brown Pale Pink
7) Clinique Mocha Pink
8) Philosophy Lip and Cheek Tint

I also have Ever Bilena Pink, but I hardly use it anymore 'coz of reasons already stated above..

I tend to alternate these everday, depending on my mood and if I wake up early enough to get a new blush from my stash.

Oooh, before I forget, I'm definitely getting 2 new blushes before the week ends:
1) Laura Mercier Azalea
2) MAC Sunbasque

I'm also lemming for NARS South Beach. Darn.

American Idol 5: Classic Love Songs Night (Review)

This theme night was good but nothing still beats Standards Night, coached by Rod Stewart. That man is a genius.

1) Elliott - Hottah hottah! And I don't just mean the way he looked but the total performance! Agree with Randy that the arrangement was too complicated; the song could have still stood out sans the messy arrangement. I have a problem with his eyes when it moves around a lot (not in a sweeping-the-audience kind of way), they're very fidgety, esp during the beginning of the song. He should try harder on working the camera and the audience, coz that's the only thing he lacks, I think. Overall, as Simon said, simply superb! Couldn't get any better than that.

2) Chris - Okay, okay, I still hate his smug smiles. But Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman was a great song choice for him because his voice has a raspiness that's so similar to Bryan Adam's. I still don't get a couple of things though: a) why does he always have to have "props" (i.e. 2 guitarists with him), why can't it all be just about the voice?, and b) the tilted head combined with the patented dead stares that relentlessly violate me. But overall, his performance was great.

I was beside myself when David Foster said he was singing from his throat. Right on! He doesn't even know what a diaphragm is for, David.

3) Taylor - See, a person can be as unassuming as Taylor and still elicit a "he's the most charming" comment from someone as great as David Foster. Did you happen to catch that, Katharine and Kellie? Anyway, I thought Just Once was a great choice for him, because if he had chosen a more ballad-y love song, it would have been a disaster. But I was a little bored with his performance.

4) Paris - Didn't wow me tonight as much as last week. I agree with Paula that she oversang.

5) Katharine - First off all, you do not wear bright colors when you have bulges at the sides and at the bra line, especially when you're wearing a slinky dress that just begs for criticisms. The style of the dress was great, but the color was way off for a big-boned girl like you. And what's up with the cleavage?! It wasn't nice to look at, it was very very disturbing. Performance-wise, I think we can sum it up in 1 sentence - "You're nowhere near the talent of Whitney Houston." And it was such a strong and passionate song, why the hell are you smiling?

I'm curious what Katharine's parents think of Kellie? Arguably, Kellie's the worst singer ever but she's Katharine's best friend. And how does Katharine feel that Kellie sucks but she's coasting along just fine week after week?

6) Kellie - O God, the disaster from hell. I applaud the audience for not boo-ing the judges when they were dissing Kellie. But why didn't I hear the words I expected to hear, such as "terrible," "horrific," "disastrous??" It's funny how the judges can sugarcoat their comments when they're for I-butchered-every-song-I-sang-but-I-still-have-the-highest-votes blonde here. Tsk tsk. Way off all throughout the song. Had you been the one singing the song during the pottery scene in Ghost, Patrick Swayze would have smacked Demi Moore's head straight into the molding pot. Or worse, smacked his own face into it just so he can escape the terrible terrible voice that can only come from you.

Is it just me or was David Foster a complete prick? =) But I loved how he was upfront with everybody. Too bad he didn't diss Kellie. That would have made my night.

~the chocolate syrup in my Sarsi float~

So came April 23, 2006 (or rather April 22) - you wouldn't even believe all the planning that went to this day, we even had an hour-to-hour detailed plan. Makes me laugh looking back at it. Would anyone believe me when I say this is our first real non-Las Pinas or Alabang date in the 6 years that we've been together? So please forgive the cheese in the next paragraphs.. =)

Dong went here so I don't have to swing by his house on the way to Makati. It still amazes me how giddy and excited I am up to this day when I know he's coming over. So anyway, once inside the car, he suddenly had this naughty grin and asked if we could go to his house for a while 'coz he forgot something. Smelling someting fishy, I reluctantly agreed. Surprise surprise, we didn't go to his house but to a flower shop near his house where a huge bouquet was already waiting for me. Okay okay, I had a hunch already what he was up to 'coz he's really not that great with secrets or surprises =) (when he has one planned for me, he cannot not tell me that he HAS something planned then he ends up telling me all about it then smacks himself afterwards for giving in so easily to my pangungulit). But I was really really touched with the gesture - mostly because I know he really didn't like giving flowers (he thinks they're not practical) and because this is the first ever flower/s I received from him. It was extra special, because he was actually worried that I wouldn't like it (!!) and he had this whole worried-puppy look in his face until I looked him squarely in the eye and told him that I loved it.

This is great, one whole paragraph entirely dedicated to a bouquet of flowers. Just great.

On to Makati we went. This is not supposed to be our first stop, but we had to drop by to get movie tickets because.... I was advised that love seats at Rockwell sell fast, so we had to get advance tickets. We couldn't help but grab a couple of burgers afterwards from our cheap but ever-reliable pitstop, Jollibee =)

We then had to rush to Getaway Spa (G-Spa) at Sgt. Esguerra Ave in QC for our massage appointment. We had a couples room reserved for us, and we were really both excited to see the place because I've been reading lots of good reviews about it. I have to tell you that we got lost trying to find Sgt. Esguerra, being the Las Pinas kids that we are, but after a while, we finally we found the place.

Okay, I really have to say this - the attendants there suck. Nothing compared to the attendants in The Spa. After a quick shower, I found out that their massage clothes consist of a short robe (not the full-robe that The Spa has) + garterized shorts. To say that the shorts was big for me would be an extreme understatement. No matter how hard I tugged on the garters, it would still fall off. So I decided not to wear it 'coz the short robe fell decently on me naman and I thought this was a spa so even if the robe was a bit short, the people there were already accustomed to all sorts of undress. So I went out of the shower and sat down on the bench and waited patiently for the attendants to call my attention to say that our room was already ready or I could go wait with Dong in the waiting room or whatever (this is the practice in The Spa, so sue me.). A full 20mins went by and they were just gossiping among themselves and looking at me from time to time. Finally, they decided to ask me if I would like to go to the waiting room - naturally, I said yes. The attendant then told me that I should go put on my shorts, which is when I realized that maybe they weren't talking to me because I didn't have the shorts on! So I asked if they had a smaller size and lo and behold, they had! I just can't get it why they gave me the largest size when it's pretty obvious that I'm hair-thin. After putting on the shorts (which was still a bit big for me), they led me to the waiting room where Dong was sipping iced tea and watching TV for the longest time!

Going now to the actual massage.. It was great! It removed the kinks in my shoulders and even after a week, it still hasn't returned, which is a miracle for me (I've always had problems with my shoulders). The couples room was so nice too! It even had a bathtub and the dim lights was perfect.

After the massage, we returned to Rockwell to catch our movie, Eight Below. To everyone who haven't seen it - go watch it. Even for someone like me who's scared to death of dogs, I was moved.

We then had dinner at Burgoo, just across the cinemas. I know, I know, this isn't the most romantic restaurant for an Anniversary Dinner, but Dong wanted to try it and it was, as I said, right across the cinemas. We had a sumptuous meal of Baked Cheesy Macaroni, Baby Back Ribs and Shrimps, and Calamari (which, if I may say, sucks compared to that of Tony Roma's).

Our official date ends here, because, as corny as this may sound, my parents told me not to be out so late. And since it was already around 9pm that time and we had atleast an hour of travel time, we headed home. Once home, he stuck around for a while, but no, not until 12mn (which would mean it was April 23 already, our official anniversary), which would really really be the king of all cheeziness. We just hung out at our favorite place - the sofa - and basically talked about the day that has been and the past 6 years that has managed to fly by so fast. This, to me, is the highlight of our day.

It may sound weird to some of you why we don't go on dates that often. Let me explain. When we were still studying, my parents really didn't like us going out that much (the reason behind this - I have to tell you in another entry). Of course we sneaked around a bit, but more often than not, we were content with playing by their rules and staying at home where we can talk more and he can spend time with my family, get to know them, be on their good side. When we finally started working, we would still see each other only once a week because of the very different natures of our jobs, and we still wanted to take advantage of the little time that we saw each other by really talking and not walking around the mall. Yeah, we watch movies a lot, but if we were to choose, we would still choose to hang out at home. That's where our relationship has grown and will continue to grow even more so in the coming years.

Pet Peeves

This is a pretty mean post, but I can't help it (evil grin) =)

I can't stand:

  • People in shuttles who don't tie their hair and let it fly towards other people's faces or other body parts.
  • People who don't wait in line (classic example: when you're in a line for a ride, you take a seat according to your place in the line. You don't push your way to the start of the line to get a good seat, by reasoning that you're included in the seating capacity of the van and you'll all be accommodated after all. Duh. I did not wake up early to give up a perfectly good seat.).
  • People who spit in public areas.
  • People who don't adapt. Just because you're raised and treated as a princess in your la-la-land doesn't mean everybody else has to.
  • People who are late. Late-comers have zero respect for the time of others.
  • Drivers of PUVs (this includes tricycles) who dress shabbily or God-forbid, smell horribly. Please spare us. Can't a small portion of your ever-increasing fares be put to good use by purchasing tools for hygienic purposes?
  • People in cinemas and chapels who don't put their phones into silent mode.
  • Taxi drivers who keep dropping hints that you just HAVE to add a couple of pesos to their meter. Just a tip - people would give bigger tips if you keep your mouth shut and just be nice.
  • Oh, please add to the previous item - Taxi drivers who go "Tsk. Tsk. Tsk" every so often when your destination is a little far or is a bit into the woods. Newsflash: we WILL pay every single centavo in your meter, that's why we flagged you down.
  • Church-goers who don't dress appropriately. I once saw a teenager hearing Mass wearing a shirt that said "I love Sex." WTF?! Yes, I do believe that it is not our outside appearance that matters, but this is just borderline cheap and annoying and distasteful and everything else in between.

More to come, I just really have to sleep now =)

American Idol 5: Queen Night (Review)

The ------ below signifies my classification from Great, Passable, and Eeeww.

Here are my rankings for AI Queen Night:
1) Elliott - Excuse me Simon, but did you just say "He (just) pulled it off?!?" He did more than that, you prick. Elliott's talent is so wasted in AI. Once again, tough song yet he delivered brilliantly. He should stick to these type of songs (i.e. Moody's Mood for Love, If You Really Love Me) that are more upbeat than say, Heaven. Looking hotter and hotter, Elliott. I could listen to you DJ all day.

2) Taylor - Funny line: "I chose this song because... I get to dance." Hahaha - as if you haven't done enough dancing. I'll agree with Randy on this one - Taylor's back! He's got some fancy dance moves now (it was so funny with the mic stand thing), not the usual tics. I am amazed that he can sing his way through superbly and still work the stage. Out of the Chosen Three, God, please let it be Taylor.

3) Paris - Let's see big sister Fantasia stand up and cheer for Paris! I love how this girl can transform herself to any image that suits the week's theme. That's not to say that I like her clothes yesterday - coz I do not. Makes her look smaller than she already is. But I loved her performance. A toss-up between her and Taylor for the first 2 spots. It is just me or did she seem sad during the intro? She was talking about the highlight of her AI journey yet she seemed sad.

* In my book, these should be the Top 3 this season. 4th should be Katharine.
---------

4) Bucky - What is he thinking choosing a song entitled Fat Bottomed Girls?! He always chooses safe songs, and I find myself getting bored. If the other 4 below him didn't do terribly, he'll be in my last spot. Didn't work for me tonight, Bucky. I still like you though.
---------

5) Katharine - Girl, you need not interrupt Simon every single time - such a biatch. And all those bungled notes didn't help you either. I cringe when I hear her "forev-eeeerrrrrrr."

6) Kellie - Did the same lighting director work on Kellie and Katharine's performances?! While Katharine's was great, the start of Kellie's performance was straight out of, yes Simon, Night of the Living Dead. Hate her clothes too. You did have big shoes to fill and sadly (and expectedly), you did not deliver tonight. And what's up with repeating "on paper?!?" around 10seconds after Simon said it?! Makes me wonder if you had to think about what naive-blond-chick trick you can pull tonight. It's unbelievable when the judges say "it was aiight" and "I was entertained" when Kellie butchered Bohemian Rhapsody, but I believe without a doubt that if it were the other contestants who sang it the way she did, they would have received a big spanking.

7) Ace - O God Ace. What can I say. It's true and hilarious at the same time what Simon said about you turning the song into We Will Rock You (albeit) Gently. Hahahaha. You may have had fun, but I certainly did not. The band swallowed you whole, and it may be time for you to go.

* I hate Randy for agreeing with Simon that he was just being kind when he gave Ace a 5 or a 6. If you think a contestant deserved only a 1 or a 2, tell that to him directly and not just as an afterthought, dawg.

8) Chris - Last I checked, AI is still a singing competition and not a shouting competition. He was the first one I heard when I caught the 8pm show, and I've watched the show thrice after that (10pm, 12mn, and this morning at 11am), and I always click the mute button when it's his turn. You do not bring anything new to the table, Chris. Please go away. Now. Also, belting is different from shouting. Mandisa is a belter, you are a shouter. You do not say to Queen "I'm gonna belt it out tonight" smugly when all you're gonna do is shout.

* What's with the eyeliner?!

All in all, the show was pretty good. Can't wait to watch the results in a little while.
